Beyond the Surface: Inspiring Pioneers
I’m passionate about storytelling through art, participatory practice, and graphic design. Heritage projects have become a natural part of my work, allowing me to creatively engage with archives from institutions like Seven Stories, Museums Northumberland, and Newcastle Libraries. I’ve had the privilege of producing work that explores the North East’s arts, science, history, and literary heritage.
The Common Room are custodians of Neville Hall, historically the home of the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers since 1872. The building's archive and heritage is now being utilised to inspire the next generation of engineers and innovators.
The Common Room Late Shows Commission posed an interesting challenge. Rather than highlighting existing archive stories, we focused on what was missing—celebrating 12 overlooked women in STEM, building on the Inspiring Pioneers blue plaque project.
I was captivated by the Grade II listed Common Room building and intrigued by how to introduce new narratives without disturbing its historic fabric. Augmented reality provided a powerful way to do this. I used generative AI to create oil-style portraits of the 12 pioneers, alongside recoloured archival photos, which were overlaid onto existing paintings and architecture through AR—inviting audiences to discover hidden stories within the space.
