Dementia Friendly Newcastle:
Drawn Together
In early 2024, I was commissioned to lead an 18-month pilot project to reimagine Dementia Friendly Newcastle (DFN) through a new strategic framework and a co-created programme of community arts activity. The project focused on strengthening connections between people living with dementia, their carers, and the organisations that support them across the city.
Working closely with local partners, I helped reposition DFN as a collaborative facilitator that brings together the cultural sector, health organisations and community groups. A key part of this work involved mapping the existing support landscape to identify gaps in provision and opportunities for collaboration. I also led the development of a refreshed branding and communications approach to clarify DFN’s purpose and strengthen its visibility across the city.
Over the course of the project, I secured partnerships with 12 dementia support organisations, including the Alzheimer’s Society, Search Newcastle and Newcastle Carers. Together, we co-designed and delivered a citywide programme of creative activity, Drawn Together, engaging more than 300 people living with dementia and their carers. The programme explored how inclusive arts experiences can support wellbeing, connection and confidence.
Alongside the creative programme, I developed specialist training for artists and cultural practitioners to improve access to the arts for people living with dementia. I also designed and installed a dedicated exhibition and drop-in space at Newcastle City Library during Dementia Action Week and Carers Week 2025. The space was staffed by partner organisations for a month, providing information, conversation and one-to-one support for residents affected by dementia.
My role combined strategic development with hands-on delivery, including partnership building, stakeholder engagement, branding and communications, project management, audience development, exhibition design, safeguarding and evaluation. The pilot has created a strong foundation for a more connected, creative and dementia-aware city.
